The Wie Watch 2006 Archives
- December 21, 2006 bloggers everywhere pounce
on the teenager about her planned studies as Stanford does not offer an
undergraduate program in her "narrowed down" studies.
- December 20, 2006 Michelle Wie has been
accepted into Stanford. Wie said she did not know what she would study but
narrowed down to business, economics or marketing.
- November 24, 2006 Michelle Wie fires a
horrendous 36 hole score of 161, 27 strokes off the pace and misses the cut
at The Casio World Open in Kochi Japan ending the 17 year-old's 2006 golfing
season on a disappointing note.
- October 28,2006 Michelle Wie's final LPGA
earnings have been posted at $730,921 for 7 events I wonder how that compares
with her PGA fans Robert Allenby and Jeff Gove.
- October 12-15, 2006 Michelle
Wie finished the Samsung World Championship played at Big Horn Golf Club, Palm
Desert California 5 over par a mere 21 strokes off the lead shooting a 3
over par 75 the final day. She really hung in there among all the distractions resulting from
the opening round's 14th hole melt down. The 17 year old showed the steady play of a future champion.
- October 12, 2006 While
playing the 14th Hole, WIE WHIFFED ! leading to a quadruple-bogey 8.
She made a remarkable come back to make birdie on 15, and Michelle finished
up 2 only 2 over par for the day, 7 strokes off the lead. The composure she
showed on 14, which turned into a circus like only the 17 year old Michelle
Wie can create, may turn out to be a major stepping stone in golfing career.
- October 11, 2006 Michelle
Wie celebrates her 17th birthday
- September 14-15 2006 Michelle Wie misses the cut
of the Lumber 84 by 13 strokes in another embarrassingly horrid performance for the 16 year
old bringing into play questions of her desire to play let alone win. I doubt
she intends to "quit her quest", but if even she did Papa Wie may
have something to say. I do hope Hawaii has child labor protection laws
similar to those in California. The frosting on the cake another genius,
Robert Allenby (currently 47th on the money list, I wonder if any of that is Wie
dollars) weighs in with his
forward thinking prophecy.
- September 7-8 2006 Michelle
Wie misses the cut in the European Masters by 15 strokes, a horrid
performance for the 16 year old female, history seeking golfer. Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell said he didn't think Wie should have played.
"This is not a golf course I would have said she could play," he said. "She had no chance round here. And I just don't think women can compete against the men."
- August 6,2006 Michelle Wie finishes tied for
26th in The Women's British Open. The Low Light of this event was another
rules infraction on Michelle Wie's part resulting in a 2 stroke penalty.
- July 30,2006 Michelle Wie
(at 16 years old) finishes tied for second 1 stroke off the lead. The Evian
Masters, played at the Evian Masters Golf Club, with its breath taking
views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding alps, is one of the LPGA Major
events.
- July 14, 2006 Suffering from
heat exhaustion Michelle Wie is forced to withdraw (to
the chagrin of many Michelle
Wie supporters) from the 2006 John Deere
Classic midway through the second round. (Check
out this quote from Jeff Gove, maybe we should start the Gove Watch)
- July 8, 2006 Michelle Wie
loses quarter final round of the HBSC World Match Play Championship loosing
to Brittany Lincicone 4 & 3. At 16 years of age no one can deny it was a
great effort and tournament for the young Wie.
- July 8,2006 by defeating Se
Ri Pak 2 & 1 Michelle Wie moves on to the quarter final round of the
HSBC
- July 7, 2006 A huge win for
Michelle Wie in the 2nd Round of the HBSC World Match Play Championship as
she defeats the competitive Christina Kim 3 & 2
- July 6,2006 Michelle Wie
defeats Candy Hannemann to advance to the 2nd round of the HSBC Women's
World Match Play Championship.
- June 30-July 2,2006 Michelle Wie finishes
tied for 3rd going over par in the 2006 US Women's Open Golf Championship at
Newport CC, Newport RI. Michelle was 2 over par and finished 2
strokes off the lead. She handled the Open pressure extremely well playing
superb golf done the stretch making excellent golf shots and strong
challenging putts throughout the 3 day 72 hole women's major golf
tournament. At 16 years of age she showed a poise and confidence that belies
that telling fact. Be assured the Ladies on the LPGA tour know she's coming.
Next up she's going to go a rattle a few more cages on the PGA Golf Tour by
playing in the men's John Deere Classic July 13-16, 2006
- June 8-10,2006 Michelle Wie finishes in a 4
way tie for fifth going -6 at the MCDONALD'S LPGA CHAMPIONSHIP, 2 strokes off the pace.
Not bad for her first tournament after her
"disappointing" round at Canoe Brook.
- June 6,7 Media relations at Bulle Rock,
Camden Yard to throw out 1st pitch of Orioles vs Blue Jays Game. (Pitch was
high and outside), played 18 holes of golf.
- June 5,2006 Michelle Wie loses out in her
initial bid to become the first female to ever qualify for the US Open.
After going -2 on the first 18 and even par over the next 9 she
stumbled to +1 on the final 9. A couple of quotes from a post-round
interview that are truly enlightening "I just -- it just didn't work out."
and when asked about her playing partners " Well, yeah, definitely. I definitely don't want to play with people that don't like me. It was a lot of fun. David Gossett, I played with him like three years ago as a pro Junior in Hawaii, so it was really nice to see playing with him again today. Rick Hartmann was fabulous. They are both very good players, and I had a lot of fun playing with them. They are really nice guys, they are really good players and I learned a lot from them. You know, it was a really fun 36 holes."
16 tears old, tried qualifying for the US Open, our hats of Michelle, our
hats off.
- June 1,2006 Rick Hartmann, head pro at the Atlantic Club, Bridgehampton,
NY after hearing he was being paired with Michelle Wie June 5 at Canoe
Brook, "it's going to be some kind of circus." (We here at
TheWieWatch.com wonder what he means by that, her being there ? The media
and crowd or his round ?)
- June 1,2006 PGA Tour player Paul Stankowski (A class act) on Michelle
Wie's chances at the US Open sectional qualifier at Canoe Brook June 5,
"She can hit the ball farther than me, and I'm average"
- May 2006 Michelle Wie completes junior year
of high school.
- May 15,2006 the United States Golf Association extends a special exemption
from qualifying for the US Women's Open in Newport Rhode Island to Michelle
Wie. This is the second exemption they have extended to Wie in 3 years. The announcement
was made only moments after Wie accepted an exemption extended by the
European PGA Tour .
- May 15, 2006 Michelle Wie wins a
Regional Qualifier for the men's US Open. In doing so she becomes
the first woman ever to eligible to compete in a men's
US Open Sectional Qualifier.
- May 12, 2006 Golfworld magazine has center
spread of Michelle Wie commenting that "it took her eight tries but
she finally made a cut playing against the men". Do you people
eve know what you are saying ? She's a 16 year old girl ! How many times
have you tried to make the cut ? What, you have never even played in a
Monday qualifier ? Oh that explains it.
